Patrice Brault followed an Electronics Engineering cursus partly at the ENSEA (Ecole Nationale Supérieure de l'Electronique et ses Applications) and the CNAM (Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers). His one year CNAM dissertation focused on the fractal modeling of ionospheric random propagation chanels.

He attended the DEA (Master) of Microelectronics at University Paris-sud and did a six months trainee period at the CNET Bagneux on the study of theoretical quantum band computation and perpendicular transport in GaAlAs superlattices.

He owns a PhD in Physics, with a speciality in Information, Telecommunications and Systems (STITS Doctoral School, Université Paris-sud). His PhD dissertation focused on the Motion-Tuned Continuous Wavelet Transform and on Bayesian motion segmentation in a transformed domain (wavelet space).

Since 2007 he is at the "Laboratoire des Signaux et Systèmes", L2S (CNRS UMR8506), Supelec Gif-sur-Yvette, France.

Before joining the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, CNRS,  in 1998, he has been working in the telecommunications area for almost 18 years, on high-technology R&D projects, mainly for Matra/ Matra-Communications, Apple International/Europe Research, Sagem and the Laboratoire d’Electronique Philips, LEP, where he participated to  the development of the first complete MPEG2 digital television broadcast system.

His main research interests are signal, image and video processing and, in particular, wavelets (and more generally coherent states), motion estimation, analysis-synthesis, functional analysis, compressed sensing, Bayesian inference, fractals, physics (quantum mechanics) and physics mathematics, and their applications to shape recognition, motion estimation, segmentation, scene analysis and video compression ...
